Masonary cement is combination of Portland cement and other finely-ground materials. When mixed with sand and water, it forms "mortar", the primary binding agent used by masons in brick, block and other masonary construction. Masonary cements are classified by ASTM into three types, each designated by the letter N, S or M indicating the strength properties of that type.

Type N mix is typically used for above grade construction and is recommended for exterior brick veneers.
Type S, a stronger mix can be used above or below grade.
Type M, the strongest mix is designed for use below grade or where additional compressive strength is required.
